About the Program

The Metroplex Math Circle (MMC) is an enrichment program specifically aimed at enthusiastic, curious young mathematical minds.

The MMC program consists of a Fall and Spring session. Each session is 12 weeks long. The sessions meet weekly on Saturdays from 2:00-5:00PM, at the University of Texas at Dallas. The Spring session begins January 19, 2008 and ends April 12, 2008.

Students will be divided into three groups depending on interests, mathematical skill and grade level. The three generic tracks will typically include students from:

  • Grades 5-7
  •
  • Grades 8-9
  •
  • Grades 10-12

A typical program will feature a general lecture from a visiting speaker. These speakers are renowned in their field of expertise and will address all participants. A  break will follow the general presentation to allow Math Circle members to socialize with the speaker and each other and enjoy refreshments. After the program break, students will organize into their individual groups for lectures tailored for their track, delivered by local teachers (the program speaker may also participate in one or more of these groups). There is no formal homework, but individual work at home is important to the process of acquiring problem solving skills.
